Darling Berlin

Fresh independent films from the German capital - funny, dramatic, cinema from below

The film label “Darling Berlin” stands for fresh, unusual independent films from the German capital. They are produced and directed by a new generation of filmmakers, also known as the “German-Mumblecore” movement. Thanks to “Darling Berlin”, comic and dramatic cinema from below is being created with a lot of passion. Touching, authentic, without conventions, without compromise. While the feature films are often based on real events or people, the documentaries expand the range of topics to include other scenes or areas. To mark the tenth anniversary of “Darling Berlin” in 2024, our collection celebrates the multifaceted achievements of this film label. The current productions are complemented by some Berlin classics that also bear the label and are exciting rediscoveries. The mumblecore movement developed in Germany in 2008 and is characterized above all by improvised, dialogue-rich and minimalist film aesthetics, naturalistic acting and a low budget. Simple settings, natural lighting and little technical equipment are intended to create emotional depth and intimacy. Thematically, the films revolve around love, friendship, finding one's identity and the challenges of modern life. The filmmakers capture the attitude to life of their generation with few resources. Young directors such as Axel Ranisch and Tom and Jakob Lass are considered co-founders of the movement.
