With filmfriend, you just need your library card to discover a whole world of film: feature films, documentaries, kids' movies, and more – all completely free, at filmfriend.de or straight on your TV.

Your library card gives you convenient, user-friendly access to streaming thousands of films, with around 300 new titles every year!

Users of participating libraries can choose from over 2,300 films and 130 series, including award-winning films and series. Search functions and carefully curated collections will help inspire you to discover the right titles, without endless scrolling.  

Nowhere else are the selection criteria so clearly laid out: Our Kids section alone has 35 collections. Each children's film is not only marked with the FSK rating, but also with an educationally sound age recommendation.

And best of all, filmfriend is free to members of participating libraries in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Belgium.

Since its launch in Berlin in July 2017, a lot of other public libraries and university libraries have opted for filmfriend.

The joint project of the IT-supported Association of Berlin's Public Libraries (VÖBB) of the 12 Berlin city districts, the Central and Regional Library Foundation Berlin (ZLB) and the Senate Administration for Science, Research and Culture was launched in 1995, when the State of Berlin provided approximately DM 20 million for the project in order to provide interested users throughout Berlin with an attractive range of services in the public library sector.

A total of 80 libraries will belong to the library network in 2019. A joint online catalogue can be used to search the entire offering of the libraries participating in the VÖBB. The library management system used is aDIS/BMS, a product of a|S|tec angewandte Systemtechnik GmbH.

With a valid VÖBB library card, users can use the following services, among others:

• Ordering media with collection in a VÖBB library of your choice or delivery to your home
• Interlibrary loan of titles not available in VÖBB
• Account inspection and extension of the loan period for all borrowed media
• Digital offers: e-books, e-audios or encyclopaedias, music and film streaming, e-learning
• Payment of fees online
• Service notifications for media (depending on type by e-mail, SMS or post)

It is also possible to register online if you are resident in Berlin (plus BVG zone C) in order to use a limited range of services.
